Current role of microperc in the management of small renal calculi

Abstract: ‘Microperc’ is a recently described technique in which percutaneous renal access and lithotripsy are performed in a single step using a 16 G micropuncture needle. ‘Mini-microperc’ is a further technical modification in which an 8 Fr sheath is used to allow insertion of ultrasonic or pneumatic lithoclast probe with suction. The available evidence indicates that microperc is safe and efficient in the management of small renal calculi in adult and pediatric population. It can also be used for renal calculi in ect… Show more

“…The acceptable criteria on stone burden of the miniaturized PCNL has been medium‐sized renal stones <3.0–3.5 cm, and ultraminiperc or microperc might be suitable for stones <1.5 cm . Miniaturized PCNL can be considered when there are diverticular stones, and pediatric medium‐sized stones as well (LE:4) .…”

“…The acceptable criteria on stone burden of the miniaturized PCNL has been medium-sized renal stones <3.0-3.5 cm, and ultraminiperc or microperc might be suitable for stones <1.5 cm. [179][180][181][182] Miniaturized PCNL can be considered when there are diverticular stones, and pediatric medium-sized stones as well (LE:4). 179,180,183 Miniaturized PCNL has shown comparable surgical outcomes to conventional PCNL in terms of SFRs with lower probability of complications; 184,185 however, it seems to have longer operative times and higher intrarenal pressure than conventional PCNL during surgery.…”

“…Mini-microperc is a recent modification of micro PCNL [Sabnis et al 2013b]. As the microperc is such narrow calibre, with a propensity to bend during manipulation and stone treatment, an 8Fr metallic sheath was introduced, which allows passage of an ultrasonic or lithoclast probe with suction.…”

“…The micro-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (microperc) is a recently described technique in which percutaneous renal access and lithotripsy are performed in a single step. Microperc has been found to be safe and effective in removing small renal calculi in the adult and pediatric populations with a high stone-free rate and lower complication rate [8]. Despite all the new approaches, shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) remains the first line treatment modality that is widely used for renal, ureteral and intermediate-size renal calculi [9][10][11].…”
