The status of real estate investment trusts (REITs) rose in investment decisions and research since 2008, after the global financial crisis (GFC) and the surge in REITs. However, the sector is still in its infancy in most emerging markets and African countries. The current study examines the literature on the performance of REITs and the related risks using bibliometric and content analyses. The study’s objectives were to determine the research trends on the topic since 2008, the prominent authors, countries, and sources, the knowledge trend and themes associated with the existing research to date, and future or new directions for research. Materials from 2008 to 2022 indexed in the Scopus database were retrieved and visualised using VOSviewer software. The findings revealed that publications were mostly in Australia, Italy, Singapore, and Canada. The co-authorship links were dominant among the Australian authors. The themes that emerged were centred around REITs’ portfolio measurement, risk management in diversified portfolios, capital structure, efficiency measurement, corporate governance, portfolio risk assessment, portfolio construction, and asset allocation strategies. The findings are envisaged to be beneficial in informing further research directions on the subject. The performance threats are also highlighted for industry stakeholders’ decision-making and strategic planning around REITs’ sustainability.

Two major problems challenge the world of food today: the constantly growing demand for meat products and dealing with the volumes of waste produced by the industry. The volume of slaughterhouse derivatives produced when generating meat products threatens the health of humans and the environment. The need to feed a growing population sustainably and to find more sustainable and circular alternative treatment technologies for handling and disposing of slaughtering derivatives undoubtedly creates opportunities for several role players. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was undertaken to identify such processes, considering the different slaughterhouse derivatives generated by red meat and poultry slaughterhouse facilities. The literature search and refinement process identified 130 scientific documents for analysis. The results highlight an increase in the scientific literature on the sustainable recovery of slaughterhouse derivatives, and a diverse range of available treatment technologies to dispose of such derivatives.

Determinants of Energy Efficient Innovation: A Systematic Literature Review

Engaging firms to generate and adopt energy efficient innovation is crucial for balancing energy needs for sustainable development. In addition, a reduction in energy consumption can address environmental problems and lower production costs by reducing materials and/or energy costs and costs related to compliance with regulations. Considering the lack of systematic reviews focused on the determinants of energy efficient innovation, we address this gap and set forth to enhance the body of knowledge in the field of energy efficient innovation. To achieve the research aim, a systematic literature review and qualitative content analysis were conducted. This study offers two contributions. First, the study distinguishes the determinants of energy efficient innovation in three levels: micro-level, meso-level, and macro-level. According to the findings, the following determinants of energy efficient innovation are highlighted at the micro-level: (1) cost savings; (2) previous experience; (3) technological capabilities; (4) green capabilities; (5) innovation capabilities; (6) knowledge development; (7) organizational innovations; (8) financial resources; (9) investment in tangible assets. Meanwhile, the determinants are distinguished at the meso-level: (1) competitive pressure; (2) customer and provider pressure; (3) external knowledge cooperation; (4) social pressure; (5) voluntary agreements. Finally, the determinants are disclosed at the macro-level: (1) government subsidies; (2) current or future regulation. Second, the study provides insights on the determinants of energy efficient innovation and sets an agenda for future research. The study demonstrates the need for further investigations on the drivers of energy efficient innovation as compared to general eco-innovation.
