Current Progress and Scalable Approach toward the Synthesis of 2D Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract: 2D metal–organic frameworks (MOF) have demonstrated exceptional properties and advantages for applications in catalysis, membrane separation, medicine, and energy harvesting and storage systems as compared to their bulk counterpart. Despite these promises, scalable synthesis of 2D MOFs remains a frontier challenge in chemistry, which limits its potential for commercialization. This review article provides a brief overview on different 2D MOF synthetic approaches followed by recent advances toward the scalable … Show more

“…[ 12b,20 ] Irradiation of the colloid suspension of Ce MV + ‐NS by a laser beam exhibited the obvious Tyndall effect ( Figure a), indicating the occurrence of exfoliation of 3D layered Ce MV + and good monodispersity of Ce MV + ‐NS nanosheets. [ 21 ] The (−402) and (020) crystal faces of Ce MV + are attributed to the stacking plane from the a , b ‐axis in 2D layer. The peak at 22.4° assigned to (−802) face is ascribed to the 2D plane perpendicular to the c ‐axis.…”

“…Modulation Synthesis: Modulators are tiny dynamic molecules that compete with metal sites with for organic ligands, and control the formation of MOFs, and perform roles comparable to those of surfactants. [116,117] By introducing proper modulators into the reactions, even the most negligible variations in the reaction conditions will significantly affect the final products. [118] The small molecule of acetic acid was utilized to directly impact the coordination equilibria in the coordination modulation approach developed by Tsuruoka et al to regulate the crystal development of nanosized MOF crystals (Figure 6c).…”

“…Although top-down methods have wide applicability in the preparation of various UMOF NSs, they often face difficulties in controlling the thickness and size of 2D materials [184,185] . In contrast, bottom-up approaches offer the advantage of being more efficient, scalable and flexible.…”
