Current pathology work-up of extremity soft tissue sarcomas, evaluation of the validity of different techniques

Abstract: Objective: In patients with extremity soft tissue sarcomas (STS) a correct histopathological diagnosis is considered important before surgical treatment. We evaluated the preoperative use and sensitivity of the various pathology techniques. Methods:In a population based study in patients operated for a newly diagnosed extremity STS between January 2000 and December 2003 the preoperative pathology work-up was evaluated. Data were retrieved from a national pathology database (PALGA). The sensitivity of the three… Show more

“…This is related to the preservation of tissue architecture and increased amount of tissue delivered from CNB. 16,17 CNB has been shown in multiple studies to have sensitivities and specificities of greater than 90%. 18,19 Image guidance yields more accurate results than does non-image-guided CNB.…”

“…The scar from a percutaneous core needle biopsy is a puncture of the surface, but in deep tissues it has a tridimensional shape that is difficult to predict reliably. The accuracy of core needle biopsies ranges from 77% to 97% in published series [16,17,22,[28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. It is excellent for bone sarcomas (77%-96%) and possibly less so for soft tissue sarcomas (76%-78%).…”

“…Fine needle aspiration (FNA) and core needle (CN) biopsies are useful instruments in diagnosing soft tissue and bone tumors [1]. Both needle techniques are in most cases easy to perform, cost effective and well tolerated by the patient [2].…”
