Soil ecosystem service (SES) approaches evidence the importance of soil for human well-being, contribute to improving dialogue between science and decision-making and encourage the translation of scientific results into public policies. Herein, through systematic review, we assess the state of the art of SES approaches in tropical regions. Through this review, 41 publications were identified; while most of these studies considered SES, a lack of a consistent framework to define SES was apparent. Most studies measured soil natural capital and processes, while only three studies undertook monetary valuation. Although the number of publications increased (from 1 to 41), between 2001 and 2019, the total number of publications for tropical regions is still small. Countries with the largest number of publications were Brazil ( n = 8), Colombia ( n = 6) and Mexico ( n = 4). This observation emphasizes an important knowledge gap pertaining to SES approaches and their link to tropical regions. With global momentum behind SES approaches, there is an opportunity to integrate SES approaches into policy and practice in tropical regions. The use of SES evaluation tools in tropical regions could transform how land use decisions are informed, mitigating soil degradation and protecting the ecosystems that soil underpins.

Long fallows allow soil regeneration in slash‐and‐burn agriculture

BACKGROUND: Slash-and-burn is a typical soil management system in tropical regions, in which the use of fire and the fallow time are key factors for controlling the dynamics of the physical and chemical attributes of the soil. The present study evaluated the ability of the fallow period to regenerate the soil, making it similar to the soil of a mature native forest, and compared it with other agricultural soils using a slash-and-burn chronosequence. Soil samples (0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm) were collected in areas with slash-and-burn agriculture [2-year crop (cassava); 10 and 15-years fallow] and in nearby areas with eucalyptus forest plantation, agroforestry system and mature native forest. RESULTS: Slash-and-burn agriculture does not alter soil bulk density; however, it reduces aggregate geometric mean diameter (GMD). A 15-year fallow can restore the GMD to values similar to those other areas. The sensitivity index of GMD shows the improvement of aggregation after a 15-year fallow. Total organic carbon decreases in a 2-year crop but increases in a 10-year fallow. A 15-year fallow increases particulate organic carbon and mineral-associated organic carbon compared to a 2-year crop. Total nitrogen, particulate nitrogen and mineral-associated nitrogen decrease in the years following the burning but increase throughout a 15-year fallow.CONCLUSION: The results of the chemical and physical attributes evaluated indicate that a fallow period of 15 years or more after a crop cycle in slash-and-burn agriculture can restore the original soil conditions. The soil quality conservation in the slash-and-burn agriculture is superior to that of continued cultivation of agricultural crops, or monoculture plantations.

The concept of ecosystem services (ES) creates understanding of the value of ecosystems for human well-being. With regard to soils, it provides a framework for assessments of soil contributions and soil management impacts. However, a lack of standardization impedes comparisons between assessment studies and the building of synthesis information. The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) is an important step forward, although its application to soils is not without difficulty. CICES version 5.1 defines 83 ES classes, of which only some are relevant for soils. We compiled two subsets of CICES classes: one set of soil-related ES comprising 29 services defined as directly and quantifiably controlled by soils and their properties, processes and functions, and another set of 40 ES defined as being affected by agricultural soil management. Additionally, we conducted a systematic literature review, searching for published lists of soilrelated ES that claim completeness. We identified 11 relevant lists. Of all CICES classes, 12 were included in more than 75% of the lists, whereas another 36 classes were included in 25-75% of them. Regarding the suitability of the CICES classification for addressing ES in the context of soils and their agricultural management, we identified constraints, such as overlaps, gaps, and highly specific or very broad class definitions. Close cooperation between the soil research and ES communities could ensure better consideration of soils in future CICES updates. A shortlist of Highlights • Standardized definitions are needed to allow meta-analysis of ecosystem service studies and improve assessments.• CICES defines 83 detailed classes of ecosystem services, suggested as a "default list".• We identified 29 classes as soil related and 40 classes as affected by agricultural soil management. • Both subsets facilitate ecosystem service assessments in soil research and comparability of results.
