This study aimed to determine phytochemical contents, antibacterial properties, and antibiotic modulating potential of Punica granatum leaf extracts: hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and aqueous extracts as well as an extract enriched with total oligomer flavonoids (TOFs). The TOF extract contained the highest value of phenols and flavonoids. Rutin, luteolin, gallic acid, and ellagic acid were determined by HPLC analysis of this extract. The antibacterial activity was assayed by the disc diffusion method and microdilution method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli standard ATCC strains and clinical isolates resistant strains. The TOF extract was the most active against all tested strains. The checkerboard method was used for the determination of synergy between two antibiotics (amoxicillin and cefotaxime) and P. granatum leaf extracts. The best synergistic interaction was found with TOF extract combined with amoxicillin for penicillin-resistant E. coli and penicillin-resistant S. aureus. These results can be assigned to tannins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids found in P. granatum leaf extracts. Pomegranate leaf extracts or active compounds isolated from these extracts could be used to fight the emergence and spread of resistant bacterial strains.

Polyurethane (PU) was synthesized using castor oil and a trade grade of hexamethylene diisocyanate, and then PU films were prepared for wound dressing applications. The PU films were then plasma treated with the low-pressure nitrogen plasma to functionalize with peroxide and hydroperoxide groups in order to attach with acrylic acid monomers. Therefore, the polyacrylic acid polymer branches were formed on the film surfaces. Carboxylic acid groups were activated by N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N 0 -ethyl carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide and bonded with chitosan and collagen biomolecules. Untreated, nitrogen plasma treated, polyacrylic acid grafted, and finally chitosan and collagen-immobilized PU films were characterized by several tests. The tests included the attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, static contact angle, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, fibroblast L929 cell culture, and antibacterial activity assay to evaluate their in vitro cytocompatibility. The results confirmed that chitosan and collagen were immobilized successfully on the PU surfaces. The chitosan-immobilized PU and collagen-immobilized PU improved the adhesion and proliferation of fibroblast cells compared to untreated PU films. The chitosanmodified PU films exhibit the best antibacterial properties.

The potential use of leaves of Diospyros lotus L. was analyzed by using FT-IR, GC-MS and MTT through organic solvent extracts. The results showed that the leaves extracts of Diospyros lotus L. contains many kinds of bioactive organic ingredients with antibacterial, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory activities. Meanwhile the extracts have significant effect on HEGP2, SGC-7091, and K562. Therefore, it provides a scientific foundation for comprehensive application prospects in the fields of biomedicine, food, skin care products and other fields and turning waste into treasure.
