Current Levels and Management of Solid Wastes in Nigeria

Abstract: Solid waste is of serious concern in developing countries because of its high rate of generation and the low‐end quality of its management. Inefficient handling of solid wastes may result in deterioration of environmental quality, but it can also result in loss of potential resources. This study reviews current solid waste generation and management in Nigeria and the need for an effective collection, recovery, and recycling policy. Our review is based on literature searches and personal field surveys. Observat… Show more

“…Furthermore, open burning is a common solid waste management option in African countries in particular for plastic, which is a fuel for open burning on landfills and backyard waste burning [64]. Since there is no effective solid waste sorting systems; mixed wastes including plastics end up in dumpsites where they are set on fire.…”

“…Since the indiscriminate burning of solid wastes is a common practice in the country (Babayemi et al, , 2017, toxic elements may be released into the soil and consequently taken up by plants. This may be the cause of such high level of Pb detected in all the domestic dumpsites studied.…”

“…These anthropogenic activities usually result in pollution, especially in developing countries where low-end waste management is the common practice (Babayemi and Dauda, 2009). Large amounts of wastes are generated and dumped daily (Minh et al, 2006;Babayemi et al, 2017). There is a serious environmental concern, considering that a larger fraction of the wastes is hazardous in nature .…”

“…The informal waste management sector, constituted mostly of the urban poor, is effective in segregating and collecting valuable and recyclable items from the litter or from the waste stream. In order to sustain themselves economically, these workers expose themselves to poor working conditions and health hazards (Babayemi, Ogundiran, & Osibanjo, ; Singh & Chari, ; Wilson, Velis, & Cheeseman, ). Sustainable energy and revenue generation from waste can be the solution and would make a compelling business case, as it is founded on all three pillars of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social.…”
