Current Knowledge of MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS): ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI)

Abstract: Regardless of the newly diagnostic and therapeutic advances, coronary artery disease (CAD) and more explicitly, ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Thus, early and prompt diagnosis of cardiac dysfunction is pivotal in STEMI patients for a better prognosis and outcome. In recent years, microRNAs (miRNAs) gained attention as potential biomarkers in myocardial infarction (MI) and acute coronary syndromes (ACS), as they have key roles … Show more

“…The mechanism of miRNAs action is based on the inhibition of protein translation process or direct degradation of mRNA of the target genes through binding of miRNAs to the complementary region of the target mRNA molecule [ 130 ]. Much data is available confirming the participation of miRNAs in the process of physiological regulation of the heart function and also in the progression of cardiovascular diseases [ 131 , 132 , 133 , 134 ].…”

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of ncRNAs that regulate gene expression posttranscriptionally (14). These small ncRNAs are single-stranded RNAs, 19-24 nucleotides in length (15). So far, the miRBase data set (version 22) counts 1917 miRNA precursors and 2656 mature miRNAs in humans (16).…”

“…Although primarily localized intracellularly, miRNAs are also detected in extracellular fluids (plasma, serum, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, saliva, breast milk) originating from damaged or living cells (14,15). Considering the availability of blood as a sample, circulating miRNAs are being intensively investigated as potential biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular and other diseases (22).…”

“…It is mainly used in the late stages of the disease when multiple blood vessels are affected or arteries are seriously stenosed ( Su et al, 2020 ). At present, the most widely used traditional biomarkers for diagnosing coronary heart disease, such as creatine kinase MB, B-type brain natriuretic peptide precursors, and high-sensitivity troponin T/I, are affected by age, genetic background, heart-related diseases, drugs, and lifestyle and cannot be used for early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction nor can they predict the future complications of coronary heart disease ( Raggi et al, 2018 ; Tanase et al, 2021 ).…”
