Current Insights on Vegetative Insecticidal Proteins (Vip) as Next Generation Pest Killers

Abstract: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a Gram negative soil bacterium. This bacterium secretes various proteins during different growth phases with an insecticidal potential against many economically important crop pests. One of the important families of Bt proteins is vegetative insecticidal proteins (Vip), which are secreted into the growth medium during vegetative growth. There are three subfamilies of Vip proteins. Vip1 and Vip2 heterodimer toxins have an insecticidal activity against many Coleopteran and Hemipter… Show more

“…Vip3 proteins are toxic to some lepidopteran larvae and have striking structural homology to Cry toxins, despite sharing no primary sequence similarity [ 27 ]. Like Cry toxins, Vip3 toxins are thought to kill insects by binding to specific receptors in the midgut [ 27 , 28 ]. Because Vip3 and Cry toxins do not bind to the same midgut receptors, strong cross-resistance between them is unlikely [ 29 ].…”

“…Several SMs such as phloroglucinols, dialkylresorcinols, phenazines, pyoluteorine, and pyrrolnitrin that are lipopeptides extracted from Pseudomonas spp., exhibiting a wide range of antibacterial and antifungal activities have been characterized [57]. Crystal proteins, vegetative insecticidal proteins, d-endotoxins, and cytolytic proteins produced by B. thuringiensis strains have been used against Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Hemiptera species [58,59]. Prodigiosin extracted from Serratia marcescens is an effective SM at low concentrations for the control of nematode pests such as juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita [60].…”

“…There have been >150 Vip proteins belonging to four subfamilies reported so far. Of them, only Vip3 is represented by PFTs and is the largest group with 111 members [ 24 ]. Pyramiding Vip3Aa with Cry toxins appears to delay the development of field-evolved resistance against Bt -crops that express Cry proteins alone [ 25 ].…”
