Current highlights on solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas

Abstract: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas is a low-grade malignant tumor that predominantly affects young women in their third and fourth decade. Etiology and risk factors are unknown. Clinical symptoms are aspecific and most commonly due to mass effect. Diagnosis is made by computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging and histological characterization is obtained by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy. Microscopically, these lesions are composed by both solid and pseudopapillary str… Show more

“…A single-institution study performed by Kotecha and co-researchers revealed that 91% of patients taking part in this research were female, indicating the potential predisposition of the female sex to this type of pancreatic lesion [ 114 ]. Moreover, it primarily occurs in the third and fourth decade of life [ 115 ]. It is worth emphasizing that rare solid pseudopapillary tumor may be associated with familial adenomatous polyposis [ 116 , 117 ].…”

“…Generally, solid pseudopapillary tumors are round, well-demarcated and large, and their mean size ranges from 8 to 10 cm [ 113 ]. Microscopically, they are composed of both solid and pseudopapillary structures with areas of necrosis and hemorrhages [ 115 ]. It must be emphasized that solid pseudopapillary tumor and pNET have a close resemblance on imaging and cytomorphology, though they differ in their prognosis and treatment strategy.…”
