Current global food production is sufficient to meet human nutritional needs in 2050 provided there is radical societal adaptation

Abstract: We present a quantitative analysis of global and regional food supply to reveal the flows of calories, protein and the micro-nutrients vitamin A, iron and zinc, from production through to human consumption and other end points. We quantify the extent to which reductions in the amount of human-edible crops fed to animals and, less importantly, reductions in waste, could increase food supply. The current production of crops is sufficient to provide enough food for the projected global population of 9.7 billion i… Show more

“…Hedenus, Wirsenius, & Johansson, 2014;Popp, Lotze-Campen, & Bodirsky, 2010;Stehfest et al, 2009). Fortunately, human nutritional needs can be met while reducing current global levels of animal production, with smaller numbers of livestock making use of feed sources -such as grasslands -that are not directly useful to humans (Berners-Lee et al, 2018;Röös et al, 2017).…”

“…By the year 2050, a societal challenge will be to almost double the food production from existing land areas to feed more than an estimated nine billion people [1,2]. Innovation has therefore to make a step change to achieve environmentally sustainable intensification of agricultural systems.…”

“…Globalization of the world economy requires modifications of the traditional food manufacturing industry, including enlargement of production capacity, increase of sales of world brands, and unification of technologies and equipment (Godfray et al, 2010;FAO, 2011FAO, , 2018Berners-Lee at al., 2018). An important part of modern production is the transportation of raw material over long distances, the duration of which may exceed a month.…”
