“…Conversely, only erionite fibers promote HMC transformation, possibly because these fibers are less cytotoxic than amosite, having a lower content of iron 7. Chrysotile fibers, in spite of their reduced cytotoxicity, are unable to cause cell proliferation, as previously reported 40. Even short term exposure for 24 hr to erionite fibers induced low cytotoxicity, allowing a high proliferation rate, associated with formation of DNA adducts.…”

“…In the past, the approach to mesothelioma diagnosis has not always been consistent with the principles of evidenced-based medicine. 122,123 Many studies have been based on ''circular reasoning'' whereby biased assumptions were applied regarding results of immunostains based on the selection of cases that were declared by the investigators to represent ''classic examples'' of mesothelioma, without providing in their study an in-depth scrutiny of clinical, radiographic, or other parameters to support the diagnosis (such as demonstration of mesothelial features by electron microscopy, appropriately short, dismal survival, evidence of no tumor elsewhere on follow-up or at autopsy, etc). In short, not all studies have followed stringent criteria for inclusion of cases, or used appropriately matched controls, or have been based on reproducible parameters that could reduce bias in the interpretation of the findings.…”

“…In our 6 cases, other 2 asbestos and tremolite contaminated in chrysotile as shown in Table 5. Tremolite has been described to have a carcinogenic potential to cause malignant mesothelioma 21) . The problem which chrysotile or conterminated tremolite causes malignant mesothelioma has partially been controversial.…”
