Current Challenges in Embedded Communication Systems

Abstract: This article defines and analyses key challenges met in future embedded systems in networked multimedia and communication applications. Self-awareness, interoperability and embedded security are used to characterize different aspects of designing and implementing next generation embedded systems. The dynamic nature of applications and implementations as well as possible technological faults and variations need to be considered in system verification and modeling. A new design layer needs to be added to current… Show more

“…Self-adaptive computing (Salehie & Tahvildari, 2009;Isoaho, Virtanen, & Plosila, 2010), a concept originating from autonomic computing (Horn, 2001), is a promising approach to tackle with the variations and unpredictability of massively parallel embedded systems. A self-adaptive system firstly monitors its own status and the surrounding environment, in other words, with both self-awareness and context-awareness.…”

“…Context-awareness (Parashar & Hariri, 2005) refers to the monitoring of external status, for instance the environmental temperature and the behaviors of neighboring systems. Based on the self-and context awareness, the system is capable of making adaptation to optimize and match its function to different situations (Isoaho et al, 2010).…”

“…Together with this convergence, modern systems need to be selfaware and autonomous. Such a system is able to monitor its own status and make necessary reconfigurations under dynamic environmental changes (Isoaho et al, 2010). Key objectives of self-aware systems include dependability, ecology and scalability.…”

“…Rather than exhibiting pre-programmed behavior, it would in many applications be beneficial for systems to be able to adapt to their environment. Isoaho et al (2010) analyze current key challenges in developing embedded systems. One of the outlined main…”
