Current caesarean delivery rates and indications in a major public hospital in northern Greece

Abstract: It is quite difficult to reduce the proportion of caesarean deliveries, particularly in a teaching hospital with a considerable number of high-risk pregnancies. The dominant role of previous caesarean delivery among CS indications stresses the importance of performing more vaginal birth after CS if we are to avoid the self-perpetuation of the CS epidemic.

“…Lubna Ali from Karachi Pakistan reported repeat caesarean section the commonest indication for caesarean section, similar trends have been found in Northern Greece (30.9%) by Mersaovdi et al 15,16 So the decision for primary caesarean section is important, unless there is clear, compelling and well supported justification for caesarean section, a carefully supervised justified trial of labour is necessary. 16,17 Trial of scar in singleton pregnancies can be given to reduce the rate of repeated caesarean section as the risk of uterine rupture is low 0.3%. 18 Successful vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) in grand multiparous does not lead to increased maternal complication.…”

“…Concurrently, the rate of birth by Caesarean section (Csection) is increasing at a rapid pace; it has climbed from 1% to 30-38% within 2 decades in the UK [2] and is reaching proportions of 30% in the US [3] and even 50% in some regions of Latin America [4]. Accordingly, in Greece, births by C-section constitute roughly 35% of all births [5]. On this basis, several groups have reported a positive association between asthma and delivery by C-section [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13], albeit findings from other studies challenge this notion [14][15][16][17][18][19][20].…”
