Current Applications of Dynamic Navigation System in Endodontics: A Scoping Review

Abstract: This scoping review (SCR) was conducted to map the existing literature on dynamic navigation system (DNS), to examine the extent, range, and nature of research activity. Additionally, this SCR disseminates research findings, determines the value of conducting a full systematic review with meta-analysis, and identifies gaps in the existing literature and future directions. This SCR followed Arksey and O'Malley's five stages framework. The electronic search was performed in PubMed (Medline), Scopus (Elsevier), a… Show more

“…Previous systematic reviews, meta-analysis and scoping review by Jonaityte et al, Macho et al Vasudevan et al and Martinho et al have comprehensively evaluated the use of dynamic navigation in guided surgical and nonsurgical endodontics [ 12 15 ]. However it is to be noted that the present systematic review focusses on the comparison of the efficacy of free hand, static guided endodontics and dynamic navigation system in endodontic access cavity preparation.…”

“…Literature reveals several systematic reviews, meta-analysis and scoping reviews which have emphasized the overall use of DNS in endodontics [ 12 15 ], whereas the aim of the present systematic review focusses on the comparison of free hand, static guided endodontics and dynamic navigation system in terms of dentin preservation in endodontic access cavity preparation.…”

“…DNS can help the operator locate intraosseous anesthetic injection sites and calcified portion of the root system. 22 When doing an apicoectomy surgical procedure, the skilled operator can successfully perform a root resection with both the traditional method and with the dynamic imaging method. 23 However, the dynamic navigation tends to benefit the inexperienced operator, which is helpful for beginners.…”

“…Visualizing the root canal system is typically limited to radiographs [ 5 ], and most free‐hand procedures are performed without direct visual guidance. However, indistinct canal paths or canals not visible on a radiograph elevate risks of mishaps during dental procedures [ 6 ]. Common procedural errors during access cavity preparation include deviated penetration points, incomplete or small access cavities, excessive dentin removal which may lead to tooth fracture under functional loads, and perforations due to incorrect drill inclination or deep penetration.…”
