Current Applications for Nuclear Medicine Imaging in Pulmonary Disease

Abstract: Purpose of Review The main goal of the article is to familiarize the reader with commonly and uncommonly used nuclear medicine procedures that can significantly contribute to improved patient care. The article presents examples of specific modality utilization in the chest including assessment of lung ventilation and perfusion, imaging options for broad range of infectious and inflammatory processes, and selected aspects of oncologic imaging. In addition, rapidly developing new techniques utilizin… Show more

“…Oral contrast may help distinguish bowel wall thickening [ 9 ]. Nuclear medicine scans like technetium-hexametazime or indium-label white blood cell scans help detect low-grade graft infections [ 10 , 11 ]. In our case, CTA showed a fusiform aneurysm of the arch of the aorta extending from the left subclavian to the origin of the superior mesenteric artery with an aortoesophageal fistula, which is covered by a thrombus.…”

“…FDG PET has emerged as a non-invasive technique for diagnosing and monitoring infectious diseases. 29 In the setting of acute infection, neutrophils depend on anaerobic glycolysis to maintain cellular activity and glucose transporters are overexpressed in activated inflammatory cells, leading to increased FDG uptake. The pathophysiology of COVID-19 pneumonia involves the accumulation of alveolar macrophages and neutrophils due to immune host response and subsequent release of inflammatory cytokines.…”

“…This is very important, where different diseases may have the same appearance on other modalities and more specific tests would be valuable. 59 In both imaging modalities, clinical application and diagnostic imaging have been applied in the same perspective. Availability of a variety of probes and strategies confer PET a high degree of versatility.…”
