Current and Potential Role of Thermoradiotherapy for Solid Tumours

Abstract: The disappointing results for inoperable, locally advanced or recurrent solid tumours of the uterine cervix, rectum, chest wall, liver and deep seated, high-risk sarcomas after conventional radiotherapy alone necessitate the search for improved treatments. A benefit from simultaneous radiochemotherapy with regard to local tumour control and survival has been shown for a rising number of tumour entities. Radiofrequency hyperthermia is established in only a few centres, and represents another option to intensify… Show more

“…This is not universally true, and clinical hyperthermia often results in tumor cell kill as much because of heat effects on aberrant tumor vasculature as due to direct thermal destruction of tumor cells. Hyperthermia also enhances tumor sensitivity to radiation, and loco-regional hyperthermia is now an established adjunct to radiotherapy [1, 2]. Whole body thermal therapy, the deliberate heating of the entire body to achieve an elevated core temperature, can treat not only primary tumors but also metastatic disease.…”

“…This technique has been widely used in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea, as well as in tongue and throat operation. [2,3] In this study, a high curative effect was obtained among 85 patients with benign vocal cord tumors treated under low temperature-controlled radiofrequency in our hospital from September 2011 to October 2013. The results are reported in this paper.…”
