Current Advances in the Action Mechanisms of Safeners

Abstract: Herbicide safeners are a series of agrochemicals that can selectively protect crop plants from herbicide injury without affecting herbicidal efficacy. Understanding mechanisms by which safeners act is significant for discovery of novel types. Safeners primarily alleviate herbicide phytotoxicity to crop plants via several actions: (i) enhancing metabolism of herbicides in crops; (ii) affecting absorption and transportation of herbicides in crops; (iii) competitively binding to herbicide target sites; and (iv) a… Show more

“…As of now, various natural products can be used as safeners. Jablonkai noted the relevance of a secondary plant metabolite, cyclic hydroxamic acids with a 1,4-benzoxazin-3-one skeleton, found in cereals such as wheat, maize, and rye, for the catalytic effect of non-enzymatic hydrolysis of 2-chloro-triazine herbicides such as atrazine and simazine to generate non-phytotoxic 2-hydroxy derivatives. , Deng noted that N -alkyl-substituted compounds are obtained from Zanthoxylum species and possess some important physiological and pharmacological functions . Abscisic acid (ABA), as a natural product, is an important phytohormone that participates in many aspects of plant growth and development .…”

“…To eliminate such negative effects and to raise crop yields, herbicide safeners (also called herbicide antidotes or detoxifiers) are successfully used. Herbicide safeners [ 39 , 40 , 41 ] can be defined as agrochemicals that are able to neutralize phytotoxins in plants, thus protecting crop plants from herbicide injury. Safeners are harmless to crop plants (or even have a growth-stimulating effect), but do not affect the activity of herbicides against weeds.…”

“…One of the most effective approaches to increase plant resistance towards herbicides is the activation of metabolic processes affected by herbicide safeners (also called herbicide antidotes or detoxifiers) [ 104 , 105 ]. Herbicide safeners can be defined [ 106 ] as agrochemicals suitable for neutralization of phytotoxins in plants, thus protecting crop plants from herbicide injury.…”
