Nanocomposite modification has attracted much attention in improving properties of bio-based polymer coating material for coated fertilizer. Herein two comparable polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), with eight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and octaphenyl groups attached to the cage, respectively, were successfully incorporated into thin castor oil-based polyurethane coatings via in-situ polymerization on the urea surface. The nanostructure coatings are environmentally friendly, easy to prepare, and property-tunable. The results show that the vertex group of POSS had a pronounced influence on dispersion level and interaction between polyurethane and POSS that well-tuned the release pattern and period of coated urea, even at the coating rate as low as of 2 wt%. The liquid POSS with long and flexible PEG groups had better compatibility and dispersibility in polyurethane matrix than the solid POSS with rigid octaphenyl groups, as evidenced by SEM/EDS. The unique properties were resulted from the different extents of physical crosslinkings. This modification of bio-based polyurethane coating with POSS provided an alternative method of regulating and controlling the properties of coated fertilizer.

This study aims to provide further understanding on the depolymerization of polyurethanes (PU) via acidolysis. Therefore, polyurethane foams scraps are chemical recycled using different dicarboxylic acids, namely succinic and phthalic dicarboxylic acids, being the reaction products identified using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography. The results obtained show that succinic acid has higher efficiency as cleavage agent, as a result, the succinic acid ensuing recovered polyol (RP) presents higher hydroxyl value and lower viscosity. Additionally, from the oxidative‐induction time measurements, it is observed that the RP is considerably more thermally stable, than the petroleum‐based polyol, due to the higher content of aromatic moieties. Afterwards, the RP is used as substitute of petroleum‐based polyol in the production of polyurethane adhesives (PUA) and compared with conventional polyol based PUA. Due to the higher content of aromatic moieties, higher bonding strength is achieved using the RP. Overall, further understanding on the acidolysis is obtained, proving the suitability of this method for the recycling of PU.

Reactive polyurethane hot-melt resin (moisture-cured reactive polyurethane, PUR) could successfully be prepared from poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG), castor oil and dimethylglyoxime (DMG) by one or two-stage synthesis. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that the synthesis resins belonged to NCO-capped castor oil-based polyurethane. The thermal behaviors of the cured PUR were analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) instruments. The results showed that the cured resin provided remeltable properties under the dosages of 3 wt% DMG. Furthermore, the phenomenon could be proved by FTIR analysis according to the characteristic absorption peak of NCO groups after the cured resin was heated. Comparing different syntheses, the resin prepared by one-stage synthesis showed random distribution of DMG with PUR structure and that prepared by two-stage synthesis had distribution of DMG with branching structure in the prepolymer. The former obtained lower remeltable temperatures from 90 to 130 °C than the latter temperatures, which had temperatures above 125 °C. The tensile test showed that all of the PUR films exhibited typical tough behavior. Thus, the cured resin with DMG dosages of 3 wt% provided remeltable and mechanical properties at the same time. Overall, the crosslinking density and numbers of dynamic bonds should be kept in balance for preparation of remeltable PUR.
