Curcumin@metal organic frameworks nano-composite for treatment of chronic toxoplasmosis

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic protozoal disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular opportunistic protozoan parasite that can infect any warm-blooded vertebrate cell. In this study, zirconium, and iron-based metal-organic framework was prepared according to the solvothermal method. New nanocomposite (Curcumin@MOFs) was prepared by reacting curcumin with amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOF and UiO-66-NH 2). Besides characterizations of the composite by powder X-ray diffraction and scan… Show more

“…number and size of tissue cysts significantly decreased in mice inoculated with bradyzoites of Tehran strain and treated with CR-NE compared with that in negative control group (P<0.001). More recent, El-Shafey et al [8] showed that curcumin and curcumin incorporated in metal organic frameworks nanocomposite significantly decreased the mean count of cysts in brains of the treated rats infected with ME49 strain.…”

“…The presence of several tissue cysts indicates the presence of a chronic infection [7] . In experimentally infected mice, histopathological smear analysis revealed that the chosen tissues for detecting T. gondii are the liver and spleen in the virulent strain (RH), and the brain and kidney in the avirulent strain (ME49) [8] .…”

“…The tissue structure of the organs studied changed in the group of rats infected with T. gondii ME49 but not treated. Curcumin and curcumin NPs treatment enhanced the histomorphology of infected rats, which could be attributed to curcumin's antiinflammatory properties [99].…”

“…Curcumin shows activity against different types of parasites in vitro and in vivo. The antiprotozoal activity of curcumin is shown against Leishmania major , Leishmania donovani [ 156 , 157 ], Trichomonas vaginalis [ 158 ], Entamoeba histolytica [ 159 ], Giardia lamblia [ 160 ], Toxoplasma gondii [ 161 ], Neospora caninum [ 162 ], etc. The combinations of netilmicin and curcumin and metronidazole and curcumin show a synergistic effect and can be used to treat leishmaniasis and amoebiasis, respectively [ 156 , 159 ].…”
