Curcumin for the Management of Periodontitis and Early ACPA-Positive Rheumatoid Arthritis: Killing Two Birds with One Stone

Abstract: We propose curcumin as a preventive measure to avoid/manage periodontitis (PD), and as a natural immunosuppressant for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). PD, mainly caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis forming biofilm and leading to tooth decay, is a major public health issue and a risk factor for the development of RA in humans. P. gingivalis is able to trigger experimental autoimmune arthritis in animal models and in humans can induce citrullinated peptides, which not only are a source of anti-citrullinated antibodies… Show more

“…Curcumin is a naturally-derived pleiotropic compound, targeting diverse signaling and molecular pathways [ 70 ]. Curcumin derives from the turmeric plant and has been used as an adjuvant therapy to many diseases requiring a boost of the immune system [ 71 , 72 ]. Moreover, curcumin has been suggested to entail chemopreventive and anticancer properties related to PCa [ 73 , 74 ].…”

“…In collagen-induced arthritis mice, levels of Wnt5a protein are decreased and the Wnt/β-catenin pathway is suppressed by resveratrol [154]. Similar to resveratrol, curcumin and epigallocat-echin-3-gallate isolated from green tea suppress arthritis and have an inhibitory effect on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway [155,156]. Intriguingly, as a metabolite of ginsenoside-Rb1, ginsenoside F2 positively regulates the anagen phase and hair growth through upregulating expression of β-catenin as well as LEF-1 and downregulating expression of Dkk1 [157].…”

“…Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from the turmeric plant ( Curcuma longa ), has been demonstrated to hold many health‐related benefits and pharmacological effects, including anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial actions, and improving symptoms of auto‐immune diseases . Adjuvant use of curcumin in UC has become quite common recently .…”
