Curcumin Attenuates Gastric Cancer Induced byN-Methyl-N-Nitrosourea and Saturated Sodium Chloride in Rats

Abstract: To determine effects of curcumin on N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) and saturated sodium chloride (s-NaCl)-induced gastric cancer in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: control (CO), control supplemented with 200 mg/kg curcumin (CC), MNU + s-NaCl, MNU + s-NaCl supplemented with 200 mg/kg curcumin daily for the first 3 weeks (MNU + s-NaCl + C3W), and MNU + s-NaCl supplemented with curcumin for 20 weeks (MNU + s-NaCl + C20W). To induce stomach cancer, rats except for CO and CC were orally treated wit… Show more

“…Many studies investigated the antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects of curcumin in a variety of conditions (18) . For example, it was reported that curcumin may be useful for treating gastric injuries by gastric peroxide inhibition, ROS, leukocyte infiltration inhibition, and reduction of the cell adhesion molecule level (ICAM-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) (23) . Another study about NSAID-induced gastric damage showed that curcumin can increase catalase and superoxide as well as nitric oxide levels in the gastric mucosa (6,25) .…”

“…DMC and bisdemethoxycurcumin, natural demethoxy derivatives of curcumin, possess anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative properties and are more stable than curcumin in serum (9). Curcumin has been investigated as a chemopreventative agent in a variety of cancers, such as pancreatic, colon, liver, hematologic, and oral cancers (10,11). Repetitive exposure to UVB induces mutations as well as activates signaling pathways, thus acting as a tumor initiator as well as promoter (12,13).…”

“…Curcumin (CM) is a biphenyl compound in the herb Curcuma longa and possesses anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, wound healing, and antimicrobial activities [2,3]. CM has anticancer potential for several cancers and blocks several steps in the carcinogenesis process [4][5][6][7].…”
