Curcumin and/or omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation reduces insulin resistance and blood lipids in individuals with high risk of type 2 diabetes: a randomised controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundLowering insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia may not only enhance glycaemic control but also preserve the β-cell function, reducing the overall risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). The current study was aimed to evaluate the effects of curcumin and/or long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn-3PUFA) supplementation on glycaemic control and blood lipid levels in individuals at high risk of developing T2D.MethodsThis was a 2 × 2 factorial, randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled … Show more

“…Participants were recruited for the purposes of the curcumin and omega-3 fatty acids for prevention of type 2 diabetes (COP-D) study [25] from the Hunter region in New South Wales, Australia. Interested participants were screened through telephone interviews per the inclusion and exclusion criteria.…”

“…Curcumin, a kind of phytochemicals extracted from turmeric rhizome, has a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties, such as lowering blood lipids, anti-tumor and anti-oxidation (Abrahams, Haylett, Johnson, Carr, & Bardien, 2019;Thota, Acharya, & Garg, 2019;Zhang et al, 2019). Lee et al (2013) reported that the activities of SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px and the level of MDA in ethanol-induced mice liver can be taken a turn for the better by Curcumin.…”

“…In the present study, at the end of the intervention, the omega 3 group showed a significant improvement in glycemic indices and serum lipids compared to the beginning of the study. This disparity in results may be due to the differences in sample size (50), gender and age of the participants (48,49) and doses administered (48,50). Furthermore, a study have shown that omega-3 can activate vitamin D (51).…”
