BackgroundCurcuma longa Linnaeus and Zingiber officinale Roscoe are two main representatives of Zingiberaceae family studied for a wide range of therapeutic properties, including: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, antibacterial, analgesic, immunomodulatory, proapoptotic, anti-human immunodeficiency virus properties and anticancer effects. This study was aimed to analyse the ethanolic extracts of Curcuma rhizome (Curcuma longa Linnaeus) and Zingiber rhizome (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) in terms of polyphenols, antioxidant activity and anti-melanoma potential employing the B164A5 murine melanoma cell line.ResultsIn order to evaluate the total content of polyphenols we used Folin-Ciocâlteu method. The antioxidant activity of the two ethanolic extracts was determined by DPPH assay, and for the control of antiproliferative effect it was used MTT proliferation assay, DAPI staining and Annexin-FITC-7AAD double staining test. Results showed increased polyphenols amount and antioxidant activity for Curcuma rhizome ethanolic extract. Moreover, 100 μg/ml of ethanolic plant extract from both vegetal products presented in a different manner an antiproliferative, respectively a proapoptotic effect on the selected cell line.ConclusionsThe study concludes that Curcuma rhizome may be a promising natural source for active compounds against malignant melanoma.

Bone undergoes continuous remodeling through bone formation and resorption, and maintaining the balance for skeletal rigidity. Bone resorption and loss are generally attributed to osteoclasts. Differentiation of osteoclasts is regulated by receptor activator of nuclear factor NF-kB ligand (RANKL), a member of tumor necrosis factor family. When the balance is disturbed, pathological bone abnormality ensues. Through the screening of traditional Korean medicinal plants, the effective molecules for inhibition and stimulation of RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation in mouse bone marrow macrophages were identified. Among 222 methanol extracts, of medicinal plants, 10 samples exhibited ability to induce osteoclast differentiation. These include Dryobalanops aromatica, Euphoria longana, Lithospermum erythrorhizon, Prunus mume, Prunus nakaii, and Polygonatum odoratum. In contrast, Ailanthus altissima, Curcuma longa, Solanum nigrum, Taraxacum platycarpa, Trichosanthes kirilowii, and Daphne genkwa showed inhibitory effects in RANKLinduced osteoclast differentiation.

Pomegranate flower plant, popularly known using for the treatment of various diseases, was not investigated as a source of dye for cytological studies using human blood cells. The importance of this study is to appear dyeing result of pomegranate flower extract on human blood cells. The natural dye source was pomegranate flower known as roselle and potassium aluminum sulfate (alum = KAlSO 4 12H 2 O) was used as mordant or metal salt. Distilled water was used as solvent. Fresh, clean and air-dried flowers were extracted with distilled water at 100 °C for 30 minutes and then filtered. One drop blood from a healthy 20-year woman was spread as a peripheral on to ten plates and dried at nearly 25 °C. These slides were stained by soaking in pomegranate flower extract with/without alum (KAlSO 4 12H 2 O) at 100 °C for 60 minutes. Slides were washed with distilled water, dried and done microscobic examination. The different blood cells dyed dark orange in alum mordant media at 100 °C. As a result, pomegranate flower has the capacity to use dyeing human blood cells such as eosinophil, basophil and neutrophil.
