“…A pilot study of 100 farmworkers was conducted in 2012, and the results were used to develop and refine the methods used in this manuscript (22). Data from the summer 2014 CHIPS study was also used to determine acute kidney injury prevalence in this population (39). While the farms in this study were not randomly selected because access to the workers required employer cooperation, the study demographics were similar to the population-based sampling conducted by NAWS in 2013-2014.…”

“…Nevertheless, both cross-shift and cross-harvest findings suggest that the intervention could have positive effects on kidney function. Evidence of a production-related reduction in kidney function calls attention to the potential importance that piecework payment could have on mediating workrelated kidney function changes, as suggested elsewhere (11,(31)(32)(33). In the present study, the intervention group increased production more than other comparable groups.…”

“…33,34 In recent years, an epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology has gained increasing notice and is hypothesized to be associated with recurrent episodes of dehydration, volume depletion, and AKI caused by working in hot environments. 35,36 It is important to note that the definitive cause of Carlos' condition is unknown to Girasoles researchers, but has not been ascribed to HRI.…”
