Cumulative impacts assessment along a large river, using brown bullhead catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus) populations

Abstract: Abstract-The effects of point-source and diffuse discharges on resident populations of brown bullhead catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus (LeSueur, 1819)) in the Waikato River (New Zealand) were assessed at sites both upstream and downstream of point-source discharges. At each site, the population parameters, relative abundance, age structure, and individual indices, such as condition factor, organ (gonad, liver, and spleen) to somatic weight ratios, and number and size of follicles per female, were assessed. Physiolo… Show more

“…The mean river water temperature at Huntly is 16.4 °C (minimum 10.6 °C, maximum 22.1 °C) and mean annual flow at Huntly is 334 m 3 s −1 (Environment Waikato monitoring data, EWMD). The catchment use is predominately pastoral farming and there are major inputs of treated sewage and stormwater run‐off from urban areas (West, Ling, Hicks, Tremblay, Kim & van den Heuvel 2006). Koi carp is restricted to the lower reaches of the Waikato River below the hydro‐electric dam at Karapiro, south of Cambridge.…”

“…Other endocrine pathways may also be involved. Exposure has also been associated with increases in condition factor (K) [2,8] and changes in blood parameters [9,10], as well as both increases [7] and reductions [9] in the splenosomatic index, which has been used as a biomarker of disease or immune dysfunction in fish [11].…”
