Cumulative changes in weight but not fluid volume balances reflect fluid accumulation in ICU patients

Abstract: Assuming that changes in body weight reflect changes in whole body water content cumulative daily fluid volume balances without or with correction for insensible water loss are not useful for estimating cumulative fluid balance of ICU patients. Survivors but not nonsurvivors had a significant loss of weight over time.

“…The potential for calculation or documentation errors in the charting of daily fluid balance was not discussed in six studies (Bihari, Baldwin, & Berstein, ; Fulop et al., ; Kelm et al., ; Koster, Dennhardt, Juttner, & Hopf, ; Roos, Westendorp, Frolich, & Meinders, ; You et al., ). Seven studies discussed the incidence of errors or implied that inaccuracies had occurred during the charting of fluid balance (Asfour, ; Davies, Leslie, & Morgan, ; Diacon & Bell, ; Eastwood, ; Perren et al., ; Schneider, Baldwin, Freitag, Glassford, & Bellomo, ; Schneider, Thorpe, Dellbridge, Matalanis, & Bellomo, ).…”

“…Five studies gave an explanation on how fluid balance charts were checked for accuracy and the extent of discrepancy between what was charted and then calculated by the checker (Asfour, ; Davies et al., ; Diacon & Bell, ; Eastwood, ; Perren et al., ). Two studies mentioned the use of an electronic spreadsheet in the charting of daily fluid balance totals (Koster et al., ; Schneider et al., ); otherwise, the remaining studies relied on paper‐based charting or were silent on the issue.…”
