“…Life history knowledge of all Gila is lacking due to the widespread and rapid population declines that these species experienced prior to scientific description (Minckley and Deacon 1968;Minckley and Douglas 1991). However, both life span and age at maturity are known to vary considerably among these species (Vanicek 1967;Muth et al 1985;Johnson and Belk 1999). For example, both Bonytail and Humpback Chub G. cypha are historically co-occurring, long-lived fishes that can live for up to 40 years.…”

“…Roundtail Chub, a closely related but larger species, had a greater mean fertilized egg diameter and length at hatch (Muth et al 1985) than Gila Chub. A formal description of Gila Chub larvae was not undertaken as part of our study but given the consistency with which Gila Chub will spawn in the laboratory and the proven ability to rear young to the juvenile stage, specimens needed for larval developmental studies are attainable.…”

“…Hamman (1982aHamman ( , 1982bHamman ( , 1985 reported on the spawning and reproductive biology of Humpback Chub G. cypha and Bonytail Chub G. elegans in captivity. Muth et al (1985) did the same for Roundtail Chub G. robusta. Research on spawning/culture techniques and requirements for Headwater Chub G.nigra and Roundtail Chub has been done since our study (S. A. Bonar and Erica Sontz, U.S.…”

“…One hundred and twenty juvenile roundtail chub (Gila robusta) were obtained from captive reared stocks at the Bubbling Ponds Hatchery, Arizona. All chubs in the genus Gila are morphologically very similar (Douglas et al 1989), especially as juveniles (Muth et al 1985), and they are closely related systematically (Douglas and Douglas 2007) and ecologically (Kaeding et al 1990). Because it is difficult to obtain permits to sacrifice humpback chub, roundtail chub were used as a surrogate for humpback chub in this study.…”
