Culturally Sensitive Assessment of Mental Health for International Students

Abstract: The chapter provides guidance on culturally sensitive assessment for international students’ mental health. By considering international students’ unique background and experiences, mental health professionals, as well as faculty, advisors, and student affairs staff, can more accurately and effectively assess international students’ mental health on both individual and institutional levels.

“…Concerns about the impacts of mental health on the acculturative stress and adjustment of international students should not be ignored. Unfortunately, while mental health concerns are common among students on U.S. college campuses, often campus mental health treatment centers are rooted in Western thinking and practice, to the exclusion of international students (Choy & Alon, 2019;Koo & Nyunt, 2020). We recommend that university counseling centers consider the "systemic and cultural context in which a student presents" (Choy & Alon, 2019, p. 62).…”

A multicultural perspective on mental health counseling could help address challenges that arise when international students seek treatment (Koo & Nyunt, 2020).…”

“…Having an insider perspective on the main topic of the focus group discussions allowed the first author to have in-depth understanding, empathy, and connections with participants’ shared stories of racism and discrimination in the data analysis and coding processes. Because the topic of this research is very personal to all three authors, and the authors’ research interests on understanding the intersections of race/racism and international student status are well aligned with the study, the insider perspective we brought strengthened our ability to read between the lines of participants’ shared experiences and to analyze and interpret the data from a culturally responsive perspective (Koo & Nyunt, 2020).…”

“…The characteristic of the intelligent exhibition hall is that it can provide diversity and multifacetedness, and at the same time, it shows the characteristics of dynamics and different angles when researching and designing. With the rapid development of intelligence, information about cultural relics and exhibits in museums is becoming more and more important to the museum's modules [ 4 – 6 ]. Intelligent optimization algorithms are developed based on virtual reality, which “enhance” the real world by superimposing computer-generated virtual objects, scenes, or system prompt information on the actual scenes.…”
