Acehnese Loanwords and Contact with Other World's Languages

The research aimed to uncover some Acehnese loanwords’ etymological and historical roots, which may help unravel the relationships between the world’s languages. The method applied in the research was the word-etymology model or lexical etymology to trace the word’s origins in historical linguistics. In addition, the systematic comparison with other related languages and semantic change typology were also exercised for the purpose of analysis. The data consisted of some selected Acehnese loanwords from the phone interviews with the participants selected purposively in different districts in Aceh. The findings reveal that the Acehnese language is etymologically categorized as part of the Austronesian language (Chamic and Malay), Arabic Afro-Asiatic language, Sanskrit (Bengali, Urdu, Gujarat), English, and Indo-European. The research attests that Acehnese loanwords may also be influenced by cross-language loanwords and borrowings simultaneously, such as Arabic from the Afro-Asiatic language family, Dutch or German, and English from the Indo-European language.

Tradition is a social legacy that is passed on to generations through a historical process. A tradition can survive if it continues to have a function and meaning for society. Reuhab is a tradition related to someone's death that is still being practiced by the people of Kuta Aceh in Nagan Raya Regency. This article aims to examine the function and meaning of the rehab tradition for the people of Gampong Kuta Aceh and why they continue to maintain and practice it. This study used a qualitative method with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and a relevant literature review, and then analyzed qualitatively. This research shows that the reuhab tradition is one of the traditions that is still being practiced and maintained by the people of Gampong Kuta Aceh because this tradition has a function and meaning for the community. This tradition has served as a driving force for the birth of social solidarity in society, and in its implementation, rehab has symbolic, cultural, and spiritual meanings for the community.AbstrakTradisi merupakan warisan sosial yang disalurkan kepada generasi melalui proses sejarah. Sebuah tradisi dapat bertahan jika terus tradisi tersebut memiliki fungsi dan makna bagi masyarakat. Reuhab merupakan salah satu tradisi yang berkaitan dengan kematian seseorang yang masih terus dipraktikkan oleh masyarakat Kuta Aceh di Kabupaten Nagan Raya. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fungsi dan makna tradisi reuhab bagi masyarakat Gampong Kuta Aceh sehingga mereka terus memelihara dan mempraktikkan tradisi ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara, observasi, dan kajian literatur yang relevan. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis secara kualitatif. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tradisi reuhab menjadi salah satu tradisi yang masih terus dipraktikkan dan dipertahankan oleh masyarakat Gampong Kuta Aceh karena tradisi ini memiliki fungsi dan makna bagi masyarakat. Tradisi ini telah berfungsi pendorong lahirnya solidaritas sosial dalam masyarakat dan dalam pelaksanaannya, reuhab memiliki makna simbolik, kultural, dan spiritual bagi masyarakat.

Proverbs in German Textbooks and their Equivalents in Indonesian

Abstract. Lingual elements in the form of proverbs are often found in German textbooks. Proverbs can be a medium to understand the cultural background of the German language because it reflects the culture, values, and mindset of the speaking community. However, proverbs have not been widely studied in terms of their meaning and equivalent in Indonesian. This research aims to examine the form of German proverbs in German textbooks and find the equivalent of Indonesian proverbs based on their meaning, figurative elements, and cultural backgrounds. This research is qualitative research with a literature study. The data source of this research is the German language textbooks used in universities in Indonesia. The data collected are German proverbs in phrases or sentences and analyzed morphologically and semantically to find their equivalent in Indonesian. The research instrument is the human instrument. Data collection is done by reading and note-taking techniques. The data’s validity is obtained by reading the data repeatedly and discussed in the Focus Group Discussion. The research findings showed that very few German proverbs have the same meaning and figurative elements as Indonesian. However, there are German proverbs that have the same meaning as Indonesian proverbs but have different figurative elements. In addition, there are German proverbs that do not have Indonesian equivalents. This finding confirms that people who speak German and Indonesian have different values and mindsets, although they also have the same perspective on certain realities.Keywords: Proverbs, German Textbook, The Meaning Of Proverbs, Figurative Elements
