The Mediterranean region has been increasingly receiving attention in recent years. This is due to the heterogeneity of the countries composing it, which raises several problems in business collaborations, but also unfolds several cross-national economic opportunities among Mediterranean countries. The analysis of cultural and creative industries can be useful to show that this area has many similarities, making intercultural exchange and cross-national economic development possible. This research starts from the comparison of three main Mediterranean countries situated both in Europe and outside, Italy, Spain and Turkey, and aims at highlighting the most striking similarities and differences of their features. The creativity specialization found in this region is alike, which allows us to begin to discuss the idea of a Mediterranean creativity. ARTICLE HISTORY

The creative industries, producing high value-added, creating economic dynamism and having opportunities for competitiveness, have been come to the political agendas of countries since the late last century. While the new economic geography has caused new requirements, the universities as institutions for educating labours, are expected to contribute rapidly to the process. But, studies have shown till today, education for creative class is not sufficient to respond the new conditions, are expected. In this study, the reciprocal relation between undergraduate education of creative class and industry, in particular employment practises is analysed. With the current education system, there is a gap between the graduates and needs of the industry, for filling this gap, to establish some links between industry and universities is necessary. At present, the demand for the educated labours for the industry is increasing day by day. The expected benefit by this study is to make clear how coherent the relation between undergraduate education outcomes of creative class, who are such an important for urban development, and industry needs, with respect to the development of creative industries in urban areas. ÖzYüksek katma değer üretmeleri, ekonomik dinamizm ve rekabet fırsatları yaratmaları, yaratıcı endüstrileri geçtiğimiz yüzyılın sonlarından itibaren ülkelerin gündemlerine taşımıştır. Yeni ekonomik coğrafya, işgücü yapısında yeni gereklilikleri beraberinde getirmiş, işgücünü yetiştiren kurumlar olarak üniversitelerin de sürece hızla dâhil olması beklenir olmuştur. Ancak, yapılan çalışmalarla yaratıcı işgücü eğitiminin, yeni istihdam koşullarına ve beklentilere karşılık vermede yetersiz olduğu ortaya konmuştur. Bu çalışmada, İstanbul'da yaratıcı endüstrilerde eğitim ve istihdamın karşılıklı ilişkisi, eğitim-meslek kuruluşları ile yapılan görüşmeler üzerinden analiz edilmiştir. Mevcut eğitim sistemi ile yetişen elemanlar ve endüstrinin ihtiyaç duydukları arasında boşluk olduğu, söz konusu boşluğun doldurulabilmesi için endüstri ve üniversiteler arasında birtakım bağlar kurulması gerekliliği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Hali hazırda, endüstriler için eğitimli işgücüne olan talep her geçen gün artmaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında elde edilmek istenen fayda, kentsel alanlar için öneminin bu denli anlaşılmış olduğu yaratıcı endüstri işgücünün, lisans eğitiminden sağladığı çıktılar ile eğitim programlarının endüstri gerekleri ile ne derece uyumlu bir ilişki sürdürdüğünün, kentsel alanlarda yaratıcı endüstrilerin gelişiminin sağlanması çerçevesinde anlaşılabilmesidir.

This study investigates the emergence and the rise of Creative Hubs (CHs) in Istanbul, which as Turkey’s economic capital contains most of its creative workforce and the largest number of its CHs. In the last 10 years, the number of co-working spaces (CWSs), incubation centres (ICs), labs, and makerspaces in the city has rapidly increased, following a global trend. This study aims to better understand the changing working forms of the city by investigating the motivations behind the emergence of CHs. 46 CH examples, consisting of CWSs, ICs, makerspaces, and labs, have been examined for this purpose. The study is structured around the four main categories that highlight the different aspects of CHs: structure (establishment structure and community structure), focus (sectors and professions), services (physical and social facilities), and values (motivation). The findings of the study demonstrate that members of CHs are mostly freelancers, entrepreneurs, micro SMSs, and start-ups, consisting mostly of members of Generation Y. They work predominantly in creative sectors and tend to look for flexible and cost-saving solutions, support mechanisms, and new connections for their work. The research revealed that CHs are distinguished through the services that they provide. Having emerged as new forms to respond to the distinctive needs of emerging jobs in the creative economy era, they can be considered a new landscape of the post-industrial city.
