The current paper presents the results of a national survey of 190 full-time members of Canadian sociology departments to examine the state of the discipline in 2014-15. The paper focuses on the extent of epistemological diversity in an effort to answer two key questions. First, what intellectual perspectives prevail among Canadian sociologists and, along these lines, does any particular perspective hold greater prominence? Second, what might explain the variation in the epistemological stances most commonly endorsed? The evidence reveals a preponderance of critical and feminist scholars, which can be explained in large measure by considering the social locations of sociological practitioners. The results of a logistic regression model confirm that gender, generation, geography, and disciplinary genre are significant predictors of critical and critical-feminist orientations. A discussion of qualitative responses fleshes out the dominant themes that Canadian scholars expressed in their survey responses.Résumé. Le présent article présente les résultats d'une enquête nationale menée auprès de 190 membres à temps plein de départements de sociologie canadiens afin d'examiner l'état de la discipline en 2014-2015. L'article met l'accent sur l'étendue de la diversité épistémologique dans un effort pour répondre à deux questions clés. Premièrement, quelles perspectives intellectuelles prévalentelles chez les sociologues canadiens et, en ce sens, une perspective particulière occupe-t-elle une place plus proéminente? Deuxièmement, qu'est-ce qui pourrait expliquer la variation dans les positions épistémologiques les plus couramment adoptées? L'analyse révèle une prépondérance des chercheurs critiques et féministes, ce qui peut s'expliquer en grande partie en tenant en considération les positions sociales des sociologues. Dans l'examen des problématiques de l«identité nationale» au Canada, la sociologie critique est de plus en plus tournée vers l'analyse discursive, aboutissant à des conclusions nuancées et complexes. Or, une telle approche risque d'escamoter d'autres analyses, tout aussi utiles, qui attribuent à la technologie un rôle central dans le processus de «nation‐building» au Canada. Cet article explore la sociologie de la traduction, aussi appelée théorie d'acteur‐réseau, et suggère que l'emprunt d'une telle approche se prêterait à une analyse plus complète des «questions nationales» du Canada et du Québec ‐ analyse qui intégrerait les catégories du social et de la technique. Canadian critical sociology draws increasingly from discourse analysis to work out questions of national identity in Canada, yielding complex and nuanced results, but not sufficiently engaging with other work privileging technology as a central question in Canadian nation‐building. This paper explores the sociology of translation, also known as actor‐network theory, and suggests that such an approach might usefully be taken up in order to provide a more complete analysis of the “national questions” of Canada and Québec that integrates both social and technological categories.

Cet article introduit le numéro spécial consacré au 50e anniversaire de la Revue canadienne de sociologie. Nous y retraçons l'histoire de la revue au travers d'une analyse sommaire de seséditeurs successifs et des articles et numéros spéciaux publiés au fil des ans. Depuis sa fondation, la Revue permet de suivre les plus récents développements du champ de la sociologie canadienne. L'analyse démontre que si les trente premières années de la Revue ont vu s'effectuer une transition du concept de cultureà celui de relations de pouvoir en tant que thème central, les deux dernières décennies ont quantà ellesété le lieu d'une diversification des perspectives théoriques et méthodologiques ainsi que d'un retour du "moment culturel", s'insérant dorénavant dans le cadre d'une analyse plus générale des relations de pouvoir. Les articles du présent numéro illustrent et discutent ces développements.This article introduces the fiftieth anniversary issue of the Canadian Review of Sociology (CRS). It tracks the development of the CRS through rudimentary analyses of its editors, articles, and special-issue themes. The CRS has provided a venue both for keeping pace with developments in Canadian sociology and for leading sociological research into new fields. If the first three decades of scholarship were marked by a transition from culture to power as an organizing motif, the two most recent decades have seen a diversification that recovers the cultural moment within a broader analysis of power, and that offers a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. Articles featured in this issue exemplify and reflect on these developments. WITH THIS SPECIAL ISSUE, we mark half a century of sociological scholarship in the pages of the official journal of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA). Like the Association, the Canadian Review of Sociology I thank CRS editor, Reza Nakhaie, for his extensive and unwavering support, both practical and intellectual, and J.P.
