Cultural Intelligence

Abstract: Are claims to describe and measure cultural intelligence credible? Three major objections are discussed: (a) Cultures are said to be entirely relative in their values, so holding one culture to be more intelligent than another is discriminatory; (b) cultural studies are said to be a form of postmodernism, whereas to have one central definition of culture is modernist—an imposition of our own dominant beliefs; and (c) attempts to categorize cultures are said to be crude stereotypes lacking subject. “…The five stories indicate that an interest in societal issues and commercial challenges enhances the knowledge-based economy by bridging basic and applied research (although this is less often true of Theoretical Endangered Nerds). While both basic and applied research knowledge undoubtedly contribute to prosperity (Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars, 2015; Lam, 2010), it is important to acknowledge that the Theoretical Endangered Nerd story is rooted in the historical academic tradition and answers the current global academic call for excellence, ranking and high-level performance (see also Ylijoki and Henriksson, 2017). Without Theoretical Endangered Nerds and the longstanding academic values they represent, there might be no new stories to tell, as both ex-academics’ and academics’ career stories are ultimately rooted in this classic academic culture.…”

“…An expanding literature examines this matter. For example, in the influential, much cited Riding the waves of culture the authors identify, and present options for managing, the different relationship norms that are encountered when 'doing business' in a global marketplace (Hampden-Turner et al, 2020).…”

“…The adoption and implementation of remote working is affected by the national cultural climate in a country (Daniels et al, 2001). As cultures exert a normative influence, it is important to conduct the cultural analysis to better understand successful adoption and implementation of management practices in different nations (Hofstede and Hofstede, 1984;Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars, 1994). Peters and den Dulk's (2003) research shows these varying adoption rates of remote working across nations closely correspond to Hofstede's national cultural dimensions.…”

“…As cultures exert a normative influence, individuals feel, think, and act in particular ways that are consistent with social norms, standards, and conventions. Therefore, it is important to conduct cultural analysis to better understand successful adoption and implementation of management practices in different nations (Hofstede and Hofstede, 1984;Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars, 1994). The Hofstede's dimensional model of national culture is the most widely used cross-cultural theoretical framework in organizational behavior, marketing, psychology, sociology, and management (Søndergaard, 1994;Steenkamp, 2001;Zhao et al, 2018).…”
