Cultural Heritage Conservation and Protection: Underrepresented Roles Within Sustainable Development

Abstract

The present entry examines the underrepresented role of cultural heritage, historical narratives, and ideas of identity within the UN's 2015 SDGs, with specific reference to SDG 17. The role of cultural heritage within sustainable development is presented here both as the cause and as the solution to many of the objectives set in place within the SDGs. The present chapter uses a specific case example, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to examine the issues causes by cultural heritage destruction, and the role that cultural heritage has in any meaningful and sustainable development in the region.
