The scarcity of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has prompted many countries to apply it for the development of commercial cultural tourism (CCT). Owing to its traditional culture-centered development model, a contradiction arises between commercial development and traditional cultural protection. Whether the advantages of traditional culture outweigh the disadvantages or the disadvantages outweigh the advantages has also been debated. Results and discussions of the research in this paper are helpful to consider the commercialization of ICH rationally and promote the balance between CCT and the sustainable development of ICH. This paper selects a successful example of cultural tourism of ethnic minorities in China, namely, Xijiang Miao Village. The village has 15 Chinese national-level ICH projects and has successfully applied ICH for cultural tourism development. The questionnaire was designed and distributed in the region by referring to previous research results. IBM SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0 were used to verify and analyze the questionnaire data. Commercial tourism has been a new path for the innovative development of traditional culture, an inevitable trend. CCT can not only increase the enthusiasm for the dissemination of ICH but also increase the intensity of the excavation, protection, and utilization of ICH. The development of tourism has stimulated the development of the local economy. As far as it is concerned, CCT has brought more advantages than disadvantages for the sustainable development of ICH.

PurposeThe main research questions critically examine online videos that draw attention to a local community of musical practice, noticing how these can potentially be included within the tourism promotion strategies. This paper develops a case study of four videos realised by the Louth County Board of the organisation Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) in Co. Louth, Ireland, as a part of the FleadhFest 2021 initiative. It highlights the role that virtual spaces have in enhancing a sense of belonging to a music/festival community as well as the possibility that visual and audio supports have in promoting and celebrating a destination and its cultural features.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis involves a netnographic examination of these videos (Janta, 2017), informed by the concept of “tourist gaze” (Urry, 1990; 2002) and influenced by film-induced tourism studies (Beeton, 2005).FindingsResults show how festival and event organisers responded to COVID-19 social restrictions by creating a virtual space for celebrating music heritage and local musicscape, placing an emphasis on local musical scene.Research limitations/implicationsThe research aims to inform future developments in how the organisation operates within and engages with virtual space, its members and a wider audience.Originality/valueThis is the first study to consider the virtual activities of CCÉ from an ethnomusicological as well as tourism, perspective.

Objetivo: analizar la percepción que tiene la comunidad de Zacualpan de Amilpas (México) sobre el turismo y sobre su patrimonio, para saber cuáles son los efectos de dicha actividad recreativa en las dimensiones económica, ecológica y sociocultural, a las que se incorpora, como resultado de la investigación, la política. Metodología: investigación cualitativa en dos etapas: entrevistas y observación participante en la comunidad y etnografía remota mediante entrevistas. El análisis se realizó a partir de la teoría de las representaciones sociales. Resultados: se confirma el interés en el turismo como alternativa de desarrollo debido a sus beneficios económicos. Además, se detectó la necesidad del cuidado del patrimonio. Limitaciones: es necesario combinar otras técnicas de recolección. Valor: se identificaron las funciones de las representaciones sociales: entendimiento de la percepción de la comunidad, la importancia de la identidad cultural, los comportamientos y las prácticas frente al turismo. Conclusiones: se consignaron dos tipos de representaciones sociales a partir de la percepción: hegemónicas (importancia económica) y emancipadas (interés en proteger los recursos de la comunidad).
