Cultural diversity and mental health

Abstract: While cultural differences provide a number of challenges to mental health policy and practice they also provide a number of opportunities to work in unique and effective ways towards positive mental health. Ethno-specific approaches to mental health that incorporate traditional and community-based systems can provide new avenues for working with culturally diverse populations.

“…Regarding the finding that waiters' ethnicity was a common predictor for depression and stress although not statistically significant, this supports the argument that cultural dynamics and background of individuals influence their mental health [53,54]. This can be explained to result from the effect of culture on the expectations and assumptions of individuals which affects interpretation of mental health symptoms as well as health seeking behaviours [55], and the differences in cultural practices such as diet and beliefs as espoused in a previous study [56].…”

“…Second, cultural roles are important in explaining the relationship between debts and mental health in societies and mental health differences across cultures. Therefore, examining ethnicity, culture, and cultural background in a systematic review may offer a cultural explanation on the relationship between debts and mental health (Gopalkrishnan and Babacan, 2015 ). To our knowledge, few studies on the effects of debt have been done in Asia.…”

“…We also cannot determine a "cause and effect" relationship between well-being and other variables assessed because of the study's cross-sectional nature. The impact of culture on mental health may limit the generalizability of our ndings to different cultures that differ signi cantly from the study population in context [51]. The results, however, provide new data on the psychosocial factors that may affect the wellbeing of adults in Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic.…”
