Cultural adaptation of health interventions including a nutrition component in Indigenous peoples: a systematic scoping review

Abstract: Background Indigenous populations throughout the world experience poorer health outcomes than non-indigenous people. The reasons for the health disparities are complex and due in part to historical treatment of Indigenous groups through colonisation. Evidence-based interventions aimed at improving health in this population need to be culturally safe. However, the extent to which cultural adaptation strategies are incorporated into the design and implementation of nutrition interventions designe… Show more

“…The geographical differences in the prevalence and trends of obesity are also found in the general population ( 33 ), and may be associated with socio-economic inequalities, lifestyle, food availability and other environmental and genetic factors in each region ( 45 ). These differences should be taken into consideration in developing tailored interventions and programmes to prevent and treat obesity in each country or region ( 46 ). Special attention should be placed in countries and regions where the prevalence of obesity is high and where there is an increasing trend in the prevalence.…”

“…However, no other scoping reviews have been published to date which examine the satisfaction with nutrition education and/or PSE interventions among these populations in the United States. Reviews have examined 'culturally adapted' or 'culturally tailored' nutrition education and health promotion interventions in Hispanic and Indigenous populations, (95)(96)(97) but did not include measures of whether the participants were satisfied with the interventions or their feedback about the interventions. Additional literature reviews are therefore warranted to describe participant satisfaction with nutrition education and PSE interventions in other marginalised populations.…”

“…Similar to our findings, a recent scoping review of culturally adapted health interventions for Indigenous peoples found that stakeholder involvement was common, but ownership and direction from the community were less so. 68 This may be a common finding given the nature of culturally adapting an existing evidence‐based intervention as opposed to designing an intervention with a community from the ground up.…”
