Cultivation of Methylotrophs

Abstract: Methylotrophy is the ability of numerous Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammaproteobacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, Actinomycetes, and yeasts to obtain all the energy and carbon required for growth from the metabolism of methyl compounds which have no carbon-carbon bonds. Numerous media and techniques for the isolation and culture of methylotrophs have been described, and a comprehensive description of these protocols is given, with substrates such as methanol, methylamines, and methylated sulfur compounds, and the descr… Show more

“…The assembly was done with SPAdes v3. 15.3 (23) in MetaSPAdes mode with a combination of kmer lengths of 21,25,31,35,41,45,51,55. We used the Anvi'o v6 metagenomic workflow (24) to reconstruct the MAGs, as follows.…”

“…After one month of incubation, we observed motile bacterial cells carrying much smaller cells attached to them. We further enriched these consortia by inoculating tubes of modified nitrate mineral salts (NMS) medium with this initial enrichment to promote the growth of methylotrophic bacteria (55). After one week, we observed intense growth of motile cells with curved-rod cell shape that contained numerous refringent inclusions (Fig.…”

“…Regression analysis showed no significant difference in the rate of degradation (mg•L −1 •h −1 ), determined by inferring slope and standard error values, between the untreated negative control system and test systems utilizing prototypes 1 and 2 (p-value > 0.05). Hydrocarbon degradation generally follows non-linear regression due to the formation of intermediates, and therefore drawing conclusions based solely on the rate of degradation was insufficient [18]. The differences in control and test systems were therefore attributed to the absence or presence of PAHs after 74 days, according to Figure 3.…”
