“…Thus Kornblueth and T enenbaum 11956] found a definite retardation in growth of rabbit and chick fibroblasts and rabbit iris in tissue culture when rabbit aqueous which contains practically no fibrinolytic components was added. However, the same authors proved it possible to grow all the cellular elements of the adult human iris excepting the blood vessels in tissue culture [Tenenbaum and Kornblueth, 1958]. Also, in their electron-microseopic studies on rabbit iris wound healing, H anna and R oy [1972] found a definite mitotic activity at the wound edges in the epi thelium and stromal cells, as well as in the endothelium of the blood vessels after the 3rd day.…”

The pigmented cells of the human eye have been studied mostly in histological sections. A few attempts to culture these cells were made (1,6,8,9) but no observation on their pigmentogenesis in vitro was reported. In the present publication, only the observations on the behavior and pigmentogenesis in vitro of the retinal pigment, ciliary and iris epithelium, as well as on iris clump cells and uveal melanocytes will be described.
MATERIAL A N D METHODSMacroscopically unaffected choroid with the attached retinal pigment epithelium, normal ciliary body and iris were obtained from a total of 22 human eyes removed surgically due to uveal melanoma (18 eyes), choroidal hemangioma (1 eye), idiopathic retinal detachment (1 eye) and phthisis bulbi following ocular injury (2 eyes). The age of the patients varied from 40 to 78 years except one, a 7 year old boy with a history of severe eye injury.
