Many Latinas encounter negative expectations regarding their chances of attending college in the United States. Dominant narratives legitimize these structural and relational negations by depicting Latinas as a group that voluntarily lowers their expectations of themselves as they move through the education pipeline. To increase the representation of Latinas on college campuses, postsecondary institutions are financially incented to become Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). Through the lens of resilient resistance, this qualitative study asks the following questions: (a) How do first-generation college-going Latinas define their educational expectations for postsecondary education? and (b) How do first-generation college-going Latinas enact their educational expectations through the practice of resilient resistance at a Hispanic-Serving Institution? Through the stories of four Latina undergraduates at a 4-year HSI in the American Southwest, this study contends that participants' refusal to accept other people's disbelief ignited their postsecondary education pursuits. As their own educational expectations were overrun by the expectational status quo, the participants utilized their cultural values of familismo to enact resilient resistance as they navigated inbetween institutional spaces. This article calls upon universities to establish equitable conditions within Latinas' educational environments and to actively direct resources toward their ability to leverage human agency, build coalitions, and recenter their own expectations for college success.

This critical and conceptual analysis problematizes the machismo binary and situates it in a third space framework. It explores Latinx males' higher education experiences and how machismo influences academic decision-making. Situating Latinx males' college-going in the third space provides a more nuanced portrayal of their academic decision-making across diverse postsecondary settings. In doing so, the Latinx Gender Identity Development Model for Latinx Males in the Third Space is proposed and connects machismo with other domains such as marianismo, caballerismo and familismo. The proposed framework is illustrated by applying it to Latinx males across critical dimensions that impact their decision-making in the higher education landscape.

Background: In Costa Rica, the leading cause of preventable death is smoking. Adults spend one third of their lives at work making the workplace an optimal site for smoking cessation interventions. Therefore, we developed a workplace smoking cessation pilot program among Costa Rican Justice Department government employees based on key Costa Rican values and best practices. Methods: First, focus groups were conducted among exsmokers and smokers. Participants in the focus groups and in the subsequent smoking cessation pilot study were invited to take part in the study through flyers, information sheets, and announcements from the Justice Department. The focus groups revealed that social factors were fundamental to quitting. Therefore, based on these results two programs (14 participants) were conducted consisting of seven sessions encouraging employees to utilize their family and exsmokers. Data were collected before and after the seven sessions on smoking behavior, social influence, and other factors. Findings: Five of 14 (36%) quit smoking. None of the quitters lived with a smoker, as compared with 56% of nonquitters who lived with a smoker. Also, quitters were less likely to have friends (40% vs. 67%) and coworkers (20% vs. 33%) who smoked compared with nonquitters. Conclusion/Application to Practice: Workplace smoking cessation programs should help smokers to increase their social contacts with nonsmokers/exsmokers. Smoking cessation programs should assess not only smoking patterns, but also social contacts, such as family, friends, and coworkers. Based on these assessments, smokers should be encouraged to seek-out nonsmokers/exsmokers to assist them in quitting.
