Leaf variegation is an ornamental trait that is not only biologically but also economically important. In our previous study, a Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase homologue, EaZIP (Epipremnum aureum leucine zipper) was found to be associated with leaf variegation in Epipremnum aureum (Linden & Andre) G.S. Bunting. The protein product of this nuclear-encoded gene is targeted back to chloroplast involving in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Based on a web-based homology analysis, the EaZIP was found to lack a chloroplast transit peptide (cTP) sequence. In the present study, we tested if overexpression of the EaZIP cDNA with or without the cTP sequence could affect leaf variegation. Transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing EaZIP genes with (EaZIPwcTP) and without (EaZIPwocTP) cTP sequence were generated. Many plant lines harboring EaZIPwocTP showed variegated leaves, while none of the plant lines with EaZIPwcTP produced such a phenotype. Molecular analysis of T0 plants and selfed T1 progeny, as well as observations of tagged marker GFP (green fluorescent protein) did not show any other difference in patterns of gene integrity and expression. Results from this study indicate that transgenic approach for expressing EaZIPwocTP could be a novel method of generating variegated plants even through the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated.

The cultivation of ornamental plants under different types of shelter and covering materials which reduce light intensity, resulting in morphological and physiological changes, needs to be evaluated before any large-scale use of such types of shelter covers. Baby rubber plants were grown in pots filled with peat under four different shelters and covering materials as follows: MG (multitunnel greenhouse with thermo-reflective aluminised screen), BG (buried solar greenhouse with thermo-reflective aluminised screen), NH (net house covered only with antipest mesh) and NH-AS (net house with antipest mesh and thermo-reflective aluminised screen). At the end of the experiment, the growth parameters and color of leaves, as well as photosynthetic and nutritional parameters, were assessed for each treatment. Baby rubber plants grown under NH-AS showed the highest values for growth parameters. The absence of shading in a net house may result in photoinhibition, reducing the growth and increasing the values of red (R) and blue (B) in leaves, which may be related to the increase of anthocyanin synthesis. The low level of radiation intercepted in the multitunnel and the buried greenhouse increased chlorophyll, N and P leaf concentration, while for K concentration, there was no clear trend and Na and Cl leaf concentration were similar under the different types of shelter. We concluded that the production of baby rubber plants under net house with antipest mesh and thermo-reflective aluminised screen is the best option to maximise the market value of baby rubber plants.

RESUMOO percevejo Montandoniola confusa Streito & Matocq tem sido citado como sendo o principal predador de Gynaikothrips ficorum Marchal, espécie monófaga que induz galhas em plantas de Ficus, como a espécie Ficus microcarpa L.f. (Moraceae). Estas espécies de fícus têm sido introduzidas em diversas partes do mundo, incluindo o Brasil, para utilização no paisagismo. Assim, este trabalho estudou o desenvolvimento e a reprodução do percevejo-predador usando o tripes, sua presa natural, comparado com ovos de Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) e de Sitotroga cerealella Oliver, empregados como presas alternativas para a sua multiplicação. O percevejo-predador apresentou menor duração ninfal e superior viabilidade quando alimentado com o tripes e ovos de Anagasta kuehniella comparado a ovos de Sitotroga cerealella. A oviposição, no entanto, foi 2,37 e 3,71 vezes maior quando criados com o tripes em relação às presas alternativas Anagasta kuehniella e Sitotroga cereallea, respectivamente. Ovos das presas alternativas permitem a criação do predador, mas com desempenho inferior a presa natural. ABSTRACTThe predator anthocorid Montandoniola confusa Streito & Matocq has been reported as a key predator of Gynaikothrips ficorum Marchal, a monophagous species of gall-forming thripes attacking ficus trees such as Ficus microcapra L.f. (Moraceae). This species of ficus has been introduced in various regions, including in Brazil for urban forest composition. This study evaluated the development and reproduction of the predator fed its natural prey in comparison to eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) and Sitotroga cerealella Oliver, used as factitious prey. The predator exhibited shorter nymphal development and greater viability fed thripes or eggs of Anagasta kuehniella compared to Sitotroga cerealella. The predator fed thripes produced 2.37 and 3.71 more eggs compared to eggs of Anagasta kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella, respectively. Eggs of the factitious prey furnished development and reproduction of the predator, although resulting in lower performance compared to its natural prey.
