Abstract-We consider a huge hierarchical sensor network consisting of millions of sensors arranged in clusters for scalability and cost-performance. We address the problem of how a centralized gateway can estimate the number of sensors affected by a certain event. We propose a scheme for solving this problem in the most efficient way in terms of communication cost, and a complete mathematical analysis of the estimation error. We show that the error of the new scheme is very small even if the number of sensors experiencing an event is several million.

In this paper we present a new approach called cue-based networking that uses hints or cues about the physical environment to optimize networked application behavior. We define the notion of cues and describe how cues can be obtained using wireless sensor networks as the underlying platform. We identify both the research and system challenges that need to be addressed to realize benefits of the approach under a target application of video delivery over IP networks. In the process, we identify key challenges of wireless sensor networks, namely timeliness and robustness. We design an adaptive algorithm that balances the tradeoff between them satisfying both timeliness and robustness requirements. Through an implementation of the video delivery application using the proposed algorithm in a real home environment, we highlight the practical benefits of the proposed approach.Keywords Cue-based networking Á Wireless sensor networks Á Video delivery over IP

Wireless sensor networks have recently gained a lot of attention from the researches. Wireless sensor networks are often partitioned into clusters, each managed by a cluster head (gateway). This paper reviews medium access control (MAC), an enabling technology in wireless sensor networks. MAC protocols control how sensors access a shared radio channel to communicate with neighbors in small area coverage. It classifies traditional (IEEE 802.11) and existing MAC protocols and a power efficient gathering protocol, known as PEGASIS, as examples of MAC protocol designed specifically for a sensor network. SENSOR MAC sets the radio to sleep during transmissions of other nodes unlike PEGASIS which involves non sleeping cycles.
