CubeSat Observation of the Radiation Field of the South Atlantic Anomaly

Abstract: The movement of the South Atlantic Anomaly has been observed since the end of the last century by many spacecrafts equipped with various types of radiation detectors. All satellites that have observed the drift of the South Atlantic Anomaly have been exclusively large missions with heavy payload equipment. With the recent rapid progression of CubeSats, it can be expected that the routine monitoring of the South Atlantic Anomaly will be taken over by CubeSats in the future. We present one-and-a-half years of ob… Show more

“…This paper aims to verify the capability of the 1U CubeSat to realize the measurement of the radiation spectra. This is in contrast to our previous paper in which we tested the functionality of the GPS receiver [19] and performed less complex dosimetry measurement with low volume of the used data without deeper evaluation [20,21].…”

“…The proton flux is the highest in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the location where the geomagnetic field dips closest to the Earth s surface. Unfortunately, the Earth's magnetic poles are slowly moving, which causes shifting of the radiation field maximum [21]. The Earth's radiation field also depends on the Sun's activity, which will be the scope of further investigation of Lucky-7.…”

“…The distributions of the coefficients at different altitudes were also different in the stratosphere, and the coefficients in the lower stratosphere were higher than those in the upper stratosphere. Interestingly, the South Pacific anomaly impacted the SCIAMACHY data; therefore, the data reliability for the Atlantic region east of Argentina was low [47].…”

“…Finally, Mandea and Chambodut (2020) studies the different processes at work in the evolution of the geomagnetic field, and in particular the evolution of the SAA. Table 1 by Kovář and Sommer (2021) summarizes the results of publications about the evolution of the SAA position.…”
