Cu(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II) complexes of poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride). Synthesis, characterization and thermodynamic parameters

Abstract: The complexes of poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) (poly(MVE-alt-MA)) with Zn(II), Mn(II) and Cu(II) ions were synthesized from the reaction of the aqueous solution of copolymer and metal(II) chlorides at different temperatures ranging from 25 • to 40 • C. Elemental analysis of the metal-polymer complexes suggests that the metal to ligand ratio is 1:1. The formation constants of each complex were determined by the mol-ratio method. UV-Vis studies showed that the complex formation tendency increased… Show more

“…The spectrum of the hydrolyzed form of copolymer shows a band from 3500 to 3030 cm −1 related to stretching vibration of hydroxyl groups (OH) of carboxyl moieties (hydrolyzed MA unit). This broad band partially overlaps with absorption bands between 2980 and 2840 cm −1 , which are assigned to symmetrical and asymmetrical C–H stretching vibrations of CH (hydrolyzed MA unit), CH 2 , and CH 3 (MVE unit) groups [ 24 ]. The sharp band at 1728 cm −1 is attributed to stretching vibration of the carbonyl group (C=O) (hydrolyzed MA unit).…”

“…The FT-IR absorbance spectrum of poly(MVE-alt-MA-1) is presented in Figure 2. The spectrum shows the absorption bands at 3379 cm -1 (ν O-H and ν COO-H, broad band), 2940 cm -1 (ν C-H), 1782 cm -1 (ν C=O of MA unit), 1730 cm -1 (ν C=O of carboxylic group), 1664 cm -1 (ν C=O of Schiff base), 1645 cm -1 (δ N-H), 1534 cm -1 (ν C=N), 1280 cm -1 (ν OC-OH of carboxylic group), 1104 cm -1 (ν C-O-C of MA unit)[33,34].…”

“…Its chelating properties are related to carboxylic groups of PSSA monomers (figure 5(c)). It is known that PSSA forms complexes with metal ions in solutions [28,36,37]. The chelating mechanism involves two carboxylic groups of each monomer [28].…”
