Cu@Ag/β-AgVO3 as a SERS substrate for the trace level detection of carbamate pesticides

Abstract: A Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate based on Ag/b-AgVO 3 nanobelts deposited on copper foil (Cu@Ag/b-AgVO 3 ) was used for the detection of carbamate pesticides: carbofuran, carbaryl, isoprocarb and propoxur. Cu@Ag/b-AgVO 3 has shown an excellent SERS activity for carbamate pesticides compared to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Under optimized conditions, detection limits of 2.5 pM, 10 pM, 50 pM and 75 pM were obtained for carbaryl, carbofuran, isoprocarb and propoxur respectively, suggesting th… Show more

“…Carbaryl pesticides are extensively used in the agriculture, environment, and bioscience fields due to their broad generalizability and high insecticidal efficacy but low toxicity toward a variety of warm-blooded animals [1,2]. However, residual carbaryl pesticides could inhibit the activity of enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is extremely essential for central nervous system function, and induce allergic hypersensitivity reactions.…”

“…In severe cases, the enzyme inactivity could cause serious respiratory paralysis and deadly poisonous diseases for a lot of living organisms [3,4,5]. Due to above serious problems, the Codex Alimentarious Commission (CAC) have enacted a series of relative legislation to restrict the level of carbaryl pesticides released into the environment, and a number of technologies, such as gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), thin-Layer chromatography (TLC), and electrochemical sensors, have been exploited to detect the residues of carbaryl pesticides in the environment [2,3]. Although these well-established methods could be utilized to detect trace amounts of carbaryl pesticide residues, they are usually highly priced, time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often require complicated procedures of sample pretreatment [6,7].…”

“…The most commonly used flexible SERS platforms are paper [21,22], filter paper [23], fabrics [24,25,26], poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) films [27,28,29], fiber cloth [30], electrospun fibers [31], surface-modified polymers [32,33] and also egg shell membrane [34], modified adhesive tape [35,36], sandpaper [37], copper foil [38] and cardboard [39]. Also, successful measurements have been performed using modified cicada and dragonfly wings [40,41,42,43].…”

“…Among the various nanostructured materials, Au and Ag nanostructures have received particular interest. These nanomaterials have remarkable optical and antibacterial properties [3] [4] and, fascinating applications in wide areas such as sensing [5] [6] [7], catalysis [8], optical labeling [9] [10], drug delivery [11] [12], cancer diagnosis and its treatment [12] [13].…”

“…The undergoing reaction is followed by recording for every hour, the UV-vis spectrum. In Step 2 (Ag NPs synthesis), 40 mg of AgNO 3 is dissolved in 15 mL of DI water, mixed with 2 mL of NaBH 4 (6 mg) and left for 10 min of reaction[5]. Finally, the solutions obtained in Step 1 and that of Step 2 are mixed for the preparation of Au-Ag@PEG nanomaterials and, the UV-Vis is…”
