CTX-M-55-Type Extended-Spectrum β-lactamase- Producing Shigella sonnei Isolated from a Korean Patient Who Had Travelled to China

Abstract: We report a case of CTX-M-55-type extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Shigella sonnei infection in a 27-year-old Korean woman who had traveled to China. The patient was admitted to the hospital due to abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, and fever (39.3℃). S. sonnei was isolated from her stool specimens, and the pathogen was found to be resistant to cefotaxime due to CTX-M-55-type ESBL. Insertion sequence (IS)Ecp1 was found upstream of the blaCTX-M-55 gene. The blaCTX-M-55 gene was transferred from the … Show more

“…CTX-M-type ESBLs, of different genetic groups, have been reported by other studies from Spain, France, Japan and Korea, showing that the pattern of CTX-M-type ESBL genes could vary geographically ( 27 - 30 ). The results obtained by the PCR method showed that eight CTX-M-positive Klebsiella isolates harbored both blaCTX-M-1 and blaCTX-M-2 genes, and blaCTX-M-1, blaCTX-M-2 and blaCTX-M-9 genes coexisted in three CTX-M positive Klebsiella isolates.…”

“…Over the past decade, the isolate rate of CTX-M-55 in Escherichia coli from animals has been increasingly raised. However, CTX-M-55 was not identified in clinical practices in China until 2010, when it was detected from a person who traveled to China [ 6 ]. Since then, plenty of surveys have confirmed the emergence of bla CTX - M - 55 among clinical pathogenic in China [ 7 – 11 ].…”

“…CTX-M-55 . Lee et al also reported the isolation of CTX-M-55-type ESBL-producing Shigella sonnei from a patient who had traveled to China (26). Most of these cases, including the current case, occurred in China, suggesting that CTX-M-55-producing Enterobacteriaceae are widely disseminated throughout the country.…”
