CT of pineal region tumors

Abstract: The computed tomographic (CT) features of pineal region tumors were analyzed in 60 histologically proven tumors. This is the largest reported series of histologically verified pineal region tumors studied with CT. The tumors were classified as germ-cell tumors, glial tumors, pineal parenchymal tumors, and meningiomas. Preenhancement germinomas revealed characteristically high-density areas with calcification; uniform enhancement was seen after injection of contrast material. When present, pineal calcification … Show more

“…34,56 Typically CT scanning demonstrates a relatively homogeneous lesion that is iso-to hyperdense to brain and enhances strongly after contrast administration. 14,24,33,50,51 Peripheral calcification may be evident; focal calcification may actually represent a displaced pineal body. 33 The case we describe (see Case Illustration [ Fig.…”

“…The CT imaging characteristics of neurosarcoidosis involving the pineal gland are indistinguishable from those of pineal germinomas, as sarcoids are also isodense with homogenous enhancement on CT [1, 6, 2022]. On CT imaging pineal germinomas appear isodense or mildly hyperdense with uniform contrast enhancement, typically with no calcifications other than normal pineal calcifications [1, 6, 20, 23].…”

“…1 Most tumors arising in this location are one of three types: (i) malignant germ cell tumors, (ii) pineal cell tumors, or (iii) glial tumors. While these three tumor types account for most pineal region tumors, meningiomas and metastases are not infrequently reported in the differential diagnosis of pineal region tumors.…”

“…While these three tumor types account for most pineal region tumors, meningiomas and metastases are not infrequently reported in the differential diagnosis of pineal region tumors. [1][2][3] We report a patient with a tumor not previously known to be in the differential diagnosis for pineal region tumors -a myeloid sarcoma of the pineal region with extension into the third ventricle.…”
