CT-guided implantation of radioactive 125I seed in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer after failure of first-line chemotherapy

Abstract: CT-guided radioactive seed (125)I implantation procedure is safe and well tolerated in treating locally advanced NSCLC, with few complications. It has good local control rate and can relieve symptoms without increasing side effects.

“…At a low-dose-rate brachytherapy, the 125 I seed emits continuous γ rays that inhibit tumor cell mitosis and decrease the resistance of hypoxic cells to radiation 18,19. Because the radiation from 125 I seed decreases with increasing distance, much less radiation is delivered to the neighboring organs;20 thus, we considered the possibility that 125 I brachytherapy might be an alternative treatment. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to compare 125 I brachytherapy with EBRT and show that 125 I brachytherapy can be useful to control painful bone metastases secondary to lung cancer.…”

“…The vital blood vessels that surround the tumor can also be clearly shown, which allows better control of implanting applicator and reduces the risk of damaged vessels. No radiation pneumonitis occurred in our cases because radiation from 125 I seed drops off with distance, and much less radiation is delivered to neighboring lung tissues (8,9). The slow emission of radiation from the 125 I seeds allows the surrounding lung tissues that receive…”

“…Therefore, the treatment of bilateral lung recurrences from colorectal carcinoma is usually challenging. Because 125 I brachytherapy has been accepted as a useful and minimally invasive treatment for tumors with significant efficacy by providing a high local control rate (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13), it might be an alternative treatment and provide an opportunity to achieve remission. However, there are few reports about the method of iodine 125 ( 125 I) brachytherapy for bilateral lung metastases.…”
