CT-Guided Aspiration Core Needle Biopsy of Gastrointestinal Wall Lesions

Abstract: Percutaneous CT-guided core needle biopsy from gastrointestinal wall lesions is safe and accurate, especially in submucosal lesions, and should be considered in selected cases with negative endoscopic biopsy or in which endoscopic biopsy is not possible.

“…Computed tomography 20,21 and endoscopic ultrasound-guided FNA 22 are useful in diagnosing gastrointestinal, abdominal, and retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors and in many cases may be of use in precisely subtyping a tumor such as a GIST. Dodd et al 9 described the cytologic features of four primary tumors of the tubular gut, which they designated as GISTs.…”

“…The most frequent lymph node localizations are the vicinity of the portal vein, peripancreatic and paraortic areas. Lymph nodes affected by tuberculosis are typically hypodense with surrounding enhancement.Affected lymph nodes may coalesce and may include other structures such as intestinal loops and omentum [14][15][16][17]. Studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of tuberculosis were performed but were not found to be more sensitive or specific than CT scanning [18].…”
