CT findings of an intracardiac bronchogenic cyst

Abstract: Bronchogenic cysts are classified as congenital bronchopulmonary foregut malformations. It is very rare for bronchogenic cysts to occur within the heart. A 59-year-old woman had a cardiac mass which was detected incidentally during a CT examination. The lesion was a hypoechoic mass with internal echoes on transthoracic echocardiography, and a well-defined hyperdense mass within an interatrial septum with poor enhancement on electrocardiography (ECG)-gated cardiac CT. The lesion was diagnosed as a bronchogenic … Show more

“…This patient did have a single gain mutation on microarray, however no patients with comparable duplications are identified in the literature. Although this is the first case obstructing the LVOT, 7 previous cases of intracardiac foregut cysts described in the literature have typically involved the atrial wall (1, 37) with one case occurring in the ventricular membranous septum (9). It is not known what the incidence of recurrence is for these cysts, though one case in the literature identified a one month recurrence (3).…”

“…Bronchogenic cysts are benign tumors that rarely cause symptoms [ 9 ]. Bronchogenic cysts of intracardiac origin are rare and thought to arise when a segment of the tracheobronchial tree incorrectly buds into the cardiac primordia during pulmonary branching during the third week of embryogenesis, laying rest in cardiac tissue [ 2 , 5 , 9 ]. Most cardiac bronchogenic cysts present in the pericardium, with rare occurrence in the interatrial and interventricular septa [ 4 , 6 , 12 ].…”
